Earlier Onset of Puberty on the rise among Children with Type 1 Diabetes

Image
A recent study conducted by the German Diabetes Prospective Follow-up (DPV) registry found the trends and factors associated with the onset of puberty in children with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). The findings were published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Journal. The study analyzed data from 13,127 children aged 6 to 18 years, revealed some concerning findings. Over the period from 2000 to 2021, the study discovered a significant trend towards earlier puberty in both girls and boys with T1D. In 2000, the onset of thelarche (Tanner stage B2) in girls occurred at an average age of 11.48 years, but by 2021, it had decreased to 10.93 years. In boys, gonadarche (Tanner stage G2/testicular volume >3 mL) decreased from an average age of 12.62 years in 2000 to 11.98 years in 2021. These findings indicate a clear shift towards earlier puberty, which could have far-reaching implications for the management of T1D in children. The study's regression analysis identified several factors as...

Deep learning applied to ECGs could help identify patients at high risk of AF

Image
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is recognized as an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm, affecting one-quarter of patients older than 80 years. As per studies patients with AF are 5 times more likely to experience a stroke and have up to a 25% risk of dying within 30 days of stroke. Deep learning applied to electrocardiograms (ECGs) has been successfully used for early identification of several cardiovascular diseases. A new study in JAMA Cardiology finds that deep learning applied to ECGs could help identify patients at high risk of AF who could be considered for intensive monitoring programs to help prevent adverse cardiac events. Many cases of AF go undetected, since at least one-third are asymptomatic deep learning in ECG might be new diagnostic technique. Researchers conducted a prognostic study was performed on ECGs acquired from January 1, 1987, to December 31, 2022, at 6 US Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital networks and 1 large non-VA academic medical center. Participants inc...

Include diagnostic criteria for Postherpetic neuralgia, neuropathic Pain: CDSCO panel tells Sun Pharma on Gabapentin study

Image
New Delhi: Citing that specific diagnostic criteria for Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and neuropathic pain as per international guidelines should be included in the study protocol, the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) functional under the Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has approved the drug major Sun Pharma's proposal to conduct the Phase IV clinical trial of Gabapentin extended released (ER) Tablets 300mg and 600mg. In addition, the expert panel stated that psychological problems/disorders of patients should be mentioned in the exclusion criteria. This came after Sun Pharma presented a proposal for a grant of permission to conduct a Phase IV clinical trial of Gabapentin ER Tablets 300mg and 600mg along with a Phase IV clinical trial protocol before the committee. Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin treats seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Gabapentin relieves the pain of PHN by changing the way the...

High Arterial Stiffness may Increase Risk of Cerebral Small Vessel Disease in Normotensive Individuals

Image
In a recent comprehensive study, researchers aimed to elucidate the relationship between arterial stiffness and CSVD in individuals with normal blood pressure. Individuals with high arterial stiffness (as measured by baPWV) have been found to exhibit a significantly higher prevalence of Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD), even in cases where their blood pressure falls within the normal range. This study was published in STROKE journal by Tomo Miyagi and colleagues. Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD) is a prevalent condition associated with various neurological disorders. Arterial stiffness and hypertension have long been recognized as key risk factors for CSVD. However, it's important to note that there are hypertensive patients with low pulse wave velocity (PWV), a measure of arterial stiffness, as well as nonhypertensive individuals with high PWV. The study encompassed 1,894 participants, all of whom were free from previous strokes, and involved brain magnetic resonance i...

Dr. Reddy's gets CDSCO Panel Nod To Study weight loss drug Semaglutide injection

Image
New Delhi: The drug major Dr. Reddy's Laboratories has got a go-ahead from the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) functional under the Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) to conduct a bioequivalence (BE) study of Semaglutide Injection 2mg/1.5ml (1.34mg/ml) and 4mg/3ml (1.34mg/ml) which is a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist used to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus and also indicated for chronic weight management in adults with general obesity. This came after the drug major Dr. Reddy's Laboratories presented the bioequivalence protocol and justification for Phase III clinical trial waiver before the committee. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist used to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, in June 2021, semaglutide was approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in adults with general obesity or overweight who have at least one weight-related condition, marking semaglutide as th...

FDA approves tenapanor for lowering serum phosphorous levels in CKD patients on dialysis

Image
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved tenapanor (Xphozah) for lowering serum phosphorous levels in patients with CKD on dialysis.  The agency has accepted Ardelyx’s resubmission of a New Drug Application (NDA) for tenapanor as the agent to reduce serum phosphorus in adults with CKD on dialysis as add-on therapy in patients who have an inadequate response to phosphate binders or who are intolerant of any dose of phosphate binder therapy. The FDA has determined that the NDA is a class 2 review, which results in a six-month review period from the date of resubmission. The FDA has set a user fee goal date of October 17, 2023. The company expects XPHOZAH to be commercially available in the fourth quarter of 2023, as soon as possible following an approval from the FDA. “The acceptance of our NDA is a significant milestone in our journey to bring XPHOZAH to patients. We are excited about the prospect of working collaboratively with the FDA to finalize this review over ...
