How breast milk boosts the brain

Image
A new study by scientists at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University suggests that a micronutrient in human breast milk provides significant benefit to the developing brains of newborns, a finding that further illuminates the link between nutrition and brain health and could help improve infant formulas used in circumstances when breastfeeding isn’t possible. The study, published July 11 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), also paves the way to study what role this micronutrient might play in the brain as we age. Researchers found that the micronutrient, a sugar molecule called myo-inositol, was most prominent in human breast milk during the first months of lactation, when neuronal connections termed synapses are forming rapidly in the infant brain. This was true regardless of the mother’s ethnicity or background; the researchers profiled and compared human milk samples collected across sites in Mexico City,...

Oral Orexin Receptor 2 Agonist improves cataplexy and sleepiness in patients with Narcolepsy Type 1: Phase 2 trial

Image
USA: An orexin receptor 2 agonist led to greater improvements in measures of cataplexy and sleepiness than a placebo over 8 weeks in a phase 2 trial involving patients with narcolepsy type 1. The findings from the phase 2, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of TAK-994, an oral orexin receptor 2–selective agonist, in narcolepsy type 1 patients, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Owing to hepatic adverse events, the phase 2 trial and an extension trial were terminated early. Christian von Hehn, Takeda Development Center Americas, Lexington, MA, and colleagues included patients with confirmed narcolepsy type 1 according to clinical criteria. 73 patients were randomly assigned to receive twice-daily oral TAK-994 (30 mg; n=17, 90 mg; n=20, or 180 mg' n=19) or placebo (n=17). Vitamin D deficiency and older age tied to higher risk of depression

Image
China: A recent study published in BMC Psychiatry has discovered an association between vitamin D deficiency and older age with higher depression risk, despite older age being a protective factor for vitamin D deficiency. Worldwide, depression is one of the most common mental disorders that has become a major public health concern and one of the leading causes of the global disease burden. Its occurrence risk is associated with vitamin D deficiency and may also increase with age, while there is a close relation of serum vitamin D levels with age. The existing studies primarily focused on the relationship between vitamin D and depression, or the relationship between depression and age, and they lacked analysis and comparison of the relationship between these three predictors in the same sample. Additionally, in these predictors, there is also a lack of large-sample epidemiological surveys. Therefore, it is particularly requisite to conduct a reliable cross-sectional analysis of lar...
